I’ve spent my career at the intersection of business, finance, operations, and technology. I’m a businessperson first, but I have always been drawn to technology because of what it can make possible for a business.
I have also been fortunate to live through several major shifts in technology. I started my career when DOS was normal and watched Windows change how ordinary people used computers at work. Then I watched the Internet transform how companies communicated, sold products, found customers, and eventually built entirely new business models.
I believe we are at the beginning of another shift of that size.
This time, it is artificial intelligence.
I’ve Seen This Movie Before
When the Internet first appeared, most companies did not immediately understand what it would become. At first, a website seemed like an electronic brochure. Email was useful, but few people imagined that the Internet would eventually reshape retail, banking, media, transportation, advertising, software, and much of the global economy.
The important changes came later. Companies began building businesses around what the Internet made possible rather than simply adding the Internet to the businesses they already had.
I believe something similar is beginning to happen with AI.
We are currently in the stage where many companies are adding AI to existing work. Employees use ChatGPT or Copilot to write an email, summarize a document, analyze some data, or answer a question. Those are useful improvements, but I don’t think they represent the biggest change ahead.
The bigger change comes when we begin designing companies around AI.
The Rise of the Autonomous Economy
My thesis is simple: The Internet created the digital economy. AI may create the autonomous economy.
Business software has traditionally waited for people. Someone receives an email, opens an ERP system, finds information, checks a spreadsheet, makes a decision, enters something into another system, and sends another email. Humans have been the connection between all of these systems.
AI agents begin to change that model. With the right access and controls, software can find information, reason about it, communicate with other systems, make recommendations, and sometimes take action. Instead of people constantly moving information from one system to another, intelligence can begin moving through the company itself.
That doesn’t mean ERP, CRM, email, spreadsheets, and specialized business applications disappear. I believe the opposite is more likely.
Applications remain specialized. Intelligence becomes ubiquitous.
That idea is central to much of what I am exploring today.
A Businessperson Who Builds
My interest in this transformation comes from decades of working inside real businesses. I have worked in public accounting and financial management and have served as a controller in industries including manufacturing, construction, service businesses, and food manufacturing.
Those jobs taught me that businesses rarely have clean problems. Finance connects to operations. Operations connects to sales. Sales connects to inventory, customers, suppliers, employees, data, and dozens of other things that don’t fit neatly into one software application.
Technology became an increasingly important part of how I solved those problems. Over the years, I became deeply involved with ERP systems, databases, reporting, business intelligence, automation, and tools such as Microsoft Dynamics, SQL Server, Power BI, Salesforce, and now artificial intelligence.
But technology has never been the destination for me. I care about what the technology allows a business to do.
That is why the theme behind my work is Translating Emerging Technology into Business Advantage.
What Does It Mean to Be AI-Native?
One question has increasingly shaped my thinking: If we were building a company today, knowing what AI can do, would we build it the same way companies were built 10 or 20 years ago?
I don’t think we would.
An AI-native company isn’t simply a traditional company that gives everyone an AI assistant. It begins to rethink how work itself gets done. Which tasks require a person? Which decisions can AI help make? Which processes can agents manage? What happens when our business systems can communicate and act without requiring someone to manually connect every step?
This could change the basic structure of a company. Some work that once required layers of administration may be handled by software. Small companies may gain capabilities that once required much larger organizations, while people may spend more of their time on judgment, relationships, creativity, leadership, and difficult decisions.
We are only beginning to understand what that looks like.
I Want to Build It
There is plenty of speculation about AI. I’m more interested in finding out what actually works.
That means building.
I use real business software and controlled test environments to explore AI agents, ERP systems, data, analytics, automation, and the new ways AI can communicate with business applications. I want to start with an actual business problem, build something that addresses it, see where it fails, improve it, and then understand what the result means for the larger business.
Some experiments will work. Others won’t. Both are valuable because the goal isn’t to prove that every new technology is wonderful; the goal is to understand what is becoming possible.
That leads to one of my favorite questions:
What becomes possible now that wasn’t possible before?
Why This Matters
Business leaders are already being told that AI is important. They don’t need another person telling them to pay attention.
The harder questions are what to do next.
Where should a company use AI? Which processes should be automated? Where should agents have authority to act, and where should a human remain in control? How should ERP, CRM, email, analytics, and other systems work together? What data needs to be available, and how do we keep that data secure?
Those are business questions as much as technology questions. And ultimately, they all lead to the question I care about most: Does this make the business better?
Better might mean lower costs or higher revenue. It might mean faster decisions, better customer service, fewer mistakes, more productive employees, or the ability to do something the company simply couldn’t do before.
AI matters when it creates an advantage.
Why I’m Writing This Blog
JohnWheeler.blog is where I explore these ideas in public. I write about AI, ERP, intelligent agents, business systems, the autonomous economy, and what I believe it will mean to build an AI-native company.
Some articles explain new technology in plain English. Others document things I’m actually building and testing. And sometimes I step back from the technology completely and look at what these changes could mean for companies, workers, entrepreneurs, and the economy.
I don’t know exactly what business will look like ten years from now. Nobody does. But I have lived through enough major technology changes to recognize the feeling when something much larger than a new software product is beginning to happen.
The ground is moving again.
I intend to spend the next chapter of my career understanding where it is going, building with the technology as it develops, and helping businesses turn that change into an advantage.
