What Becomes Possible When AI Can Connect to Everything?

Every major technology shift has something in common.

The technology that changes the world is rarely the part people remember years later.

When Windows arrived, most people did not care about the software architecture underneath it.

They cared about Microsoft Word, Excel, Photoshop, and the thousands of applications that suddenly became possible.

When the Internet grew, people did not celebrate TCP/IP.

They celebrated email, online banking, Amazon, Google, and businesses that could suddenly reach customers around the world.

The same thing happened with cloud computing.

Most business leaders could not explain how virtualization works. They simply knew that software became easier to access, update, and use from almost anywhere.

Today, I believe we are watching another platform shift.

This time, the shift centers on artificial intelligence.

One of the most talked-about technologies in AI is the Model Context Protocol, better known as MCP.

MCP is important.

But I do not think MCP is the revolution.

I think it is the infrastructure that makes the revolution possible.

Infrastructure Changes What Can Be Built

Every city depends on infrastructure.

Roads move people and products.

Power keeps homes and businesses running.

Water systems support daily life.

Communication networks connect people.

Most of the time, we barely think about this infrastructure because it simply works.

But without it, almost everything else stops.

Business technology works in a similar way.

For decades, companies have connected software one system at a time.

The ERP connects to the CRM.

The CRM connects to email.

Reporting connects to a database.

Documents connect through another tool.

Each new connection may require a custom API, another integration project, another consultant, and another system to maintain.

We have accepted this as normal.

But what happens if connecting AI to business systems becomes much easier?

That is the promise of MCP.

Instead of every AI application needing a different method to communicate with every business system, MCP provides a shared way for AI to discover available tools and understand how to use them.

It does not remove every technical challenge.

But it creates a much more flexible foundation.

My Perspective Changed

At first, I understood MCP as another technical standard.

Then I stopped reading about it and decided to use it.

Recently, I connected an AI assistant to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central through Microsoft’s MCP implementation.

My goal was not to build another chatbot.

I wanted to answer a much bigger question.

What becomes possible when AI can connect directly to a business system?

After making the connection, I asked the AI to retrieve information about a customer.

I did not build a custom application for that request.

I did not create a special integration.

I simply asked the question in plain English.

The AI discovered the Business Central tools that were available, selected the right tool, retrieved the customer information, and presented the result.

From a technical point of view, that may sound simple.

From a business point of view, I think it is a glimpse of something much larger.

This Is Not About Looking Up Customers

If AI only retrieved customer records, this would not be very exciting.

But that is not where this technology is heading.

Imagine asking an AI assistant to do the following:

Show me every distributor whose sales have declined during the past six months.

Identify products they do not currently purchase.

Compare them with similar customers.

Draft personalized outreach emails.

Create follow-up tasks for the sales team.

Schedule meetings during the next two weeks.

Notify me when the work is complete.

That request may require the AI to work across several systems.

It may need the ERP.

It may need the CRM.

It may need email, calendars, documents, inventory records, pricing data, and sales history.

The human describes the outcome.

The AI determines which tools and information are needed to complete the work.

That is very different from the software model businesses have used for the past thirty years.

The Real Revolution

I think many people are focused on the wrong question.

They ask, “How do I use MCP?”

A better question is this:

What kinds of businesses become possible when AI can connect to everything?

That is where the real opportunity exists.

The protocol itself will not transform a company.

The business systems, workflows, and agents built on top of it will.

History gives us many examples.

People did not adopt Windows because they were excited about its internal design.

They adopted it because of the applications it made possible.

People did not adopt the Internet because TCP/IP sounded exciting.

They adopted it because new ways of communicating, selling, buying, and working became possible.

Infrastructure enables innovation.

Innovation changes industries.

ERP Is Entering a New Era

For years, ERP systems have mainly served as systems of record.

They store transactions.

They track inventory.

They manage purchasing.

They record financial results.

That role is not going away.

But I believe ERP is starting to evolve.

Instead of only recording what happened, ERP systems can become active parts of business processes.

AI can retrieve information.

It can analyze results.

It can recommend actions.

It can execute approved tasks.

It can coordinate work across departments and systems.

The ERP becomes more than a database.

It becomes part of an intelligent business environment.

I believe this shift may be as important as the move from desktop software to the web.

Why This Matters to Manufacturers

Many manufacturers do not really have a technology problem.

They have a coordination problem.

Sales may not know what operations knows.

Operations may not know what accounting sees.

Customer service may not know what is happening in production.

The information often exists.

It is simply spread across different systems, reports, documents, and people.

AI connected through modern infrastructure can help bridge those gaps.

Instead of spending hours gathering information from several systems, employees can spend more time making decisions and solving problems.

This is not only about replacing manual work.

It is about reducing the time spent moving information from one place to another.

That allows people to focus more of their time on creating value.

I do not claim to have all the answers.

I think we are still at the beginning of understanding what this technology will make possible.

But one thing is becoming increasingly clear.

The biggest story is not MCP itself.

The biggest story is what businesses will build because infrastructure like MCP exists.

Roads made modern commerce possible.

The Internet made digital business possible.

AI infrastructure may make an entirely new generation of business systems possible.

The companies that learn to combine trusted data, business knowledge, and AI will not simply become more efficient.

They may operate in a completely different way.

That may become one of the most important competitive advantages of the next decade.
