This Memorial Day, Honor Service with Opportunity: Hire a Veteran

Both of my grandfathers served in World War II. They fought in Europe and came home with stories that shaped the way I see the world. One of my personal heroes has always been General George Patton—bold, relentless, and fiercely loyal to his troops. Because of that, I’ve always had a strong respect and affinity for veterans.

Memorial Day is a time to honor those who gave everything for our country. But it’s also a chance to reflect on how we support those who returned. One of the most meaningful ways we can do that is by hiring a veteran.

In the foodservice industry, we often talk about the labor shortage and the need for dependable, hard-working people. Veterans check all the boxes. They’re not just looking for a job—they’re ready to be part of something bigger.

Here’s why veterans make excellent employees, especially in our industry.

1. Veterans Know How to Work Under Pressure

Military life is high-pressure by design. Veterans are trained to stay calm and think clearly in fast-moving situations. That kind of focus is exactly what you want in a busy kitchen or packed dining room.

2. They’re Natural Team Players

Veterans understand teamwork in a deep way. They know how to communicate clearly, support their coworkers, and stay mission-focused. In foodservice, where every role matters, that’s a major asset.

3. Discipline and Reliability Come Standard

Veterans know how to show up on time, follow protocols, and get the job done right. That discipline is part of who they are, and it shows in their work every day.

4. They Bring Leadership Skills

Even junior ranks in the military are trained to lead. Veterans know how to guide others, build trust, and solve problems on the fly. That makes them strong candidates for leadership roles in any foodservice setting.

5. They Learn Fast and Adapt Quickly

From new equipment to updated menus, foodservice is always changing. Veterans are trained to adapt fast, learn new systems, and stay flexible—skills that are essential in our world.

6. They Take Pride in Their Work

Veterans understand what it means to serve. They bring that same pride to their civilian jobs, raising the bar for everyone around them. When you hire a vet, you’re adding someone who cares deeply about doing the job well.

A Personal Note from the Foodservice Front Lines

In all my years in foodservice, I’ve seen how veterans lift teams, lead by example, and make lasting impacts. They bring structure, loyalty, and heart to the workplace.

This Memorial Day, let’s do more than remember. Let’s act. If you’re in a position to hire, consider bringing a veteran onto your team. It’s one of the best ways we can honor their service—and strengthen our industry at the same time.
